The Breedlove Readers is a literacy initiative dedicated to fostering community, creativity, and empowerment among Black girl readers and creatives. Our literary arts model takes the form of a Young Adult (YA) book club where Black girls can engage in a communal space of reading together, shared dialogue, and curation of various art projects that speak to their lived experiences and enunciate themes within the selected novels. Dr. Courtney Mauldin-Jones is an Assistant Professor in the Syracuse University School of Education, where she prepares in-service teachers and future educational leaders. Her interdisciplinary research and scholarship illuminate how youth and girls of color use arts-based and literacy practices as methods for leadership, identity construction, and reimagining schools and communities.
